This comprehensive book is the final installment in a four-part series that meticulously chronicles the construction history of the Kongô-class battlecruiser/battleship, with a specific focus on the Haruna. Although the four vessels were of the same class, they exhibited numerous differences, some more significant than others. Included in this volume are the numerous modifications the Haruna underwent during her 30 years of service, from her initial completion as a battlecruiser in 1915 to her reconstruction and reclassification as a battleship in 1928, and ultimately to her sinking in 1945.
While the general modifications and reconstruction of this ship have been covered in other publications, this is the first book that attempts to document all 15 major and minor changes in detail, many of which have never been documented before. Each modification is illustrated with meticulous, annotated line drawings, and the rationale behind the overall changes during each period is summarized.
The drawings are complemented by the best period photographs of the ship and additional illustrations that depict the documented features added and/or altered during each phase. With this book, readers will gain a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the Haruna's pagoda bridge, masts, armament, control instruments such as rangefinders, directors, searchlights, communications equipment, aircraft, and engine/funnel arrangements, as well as the reasoning behind these changes.
This unprecedented level of detail was made possible by the author's extensive access to both English and Japanese published data, as well as the detailed examination of approximately 1,600 images and drawings of the ship collected over the past 50 years. While the exact dates of some changes are not always known or published, the most accurate information available is provided.
Each drawing meticulously documents the specific feature changes made since the last period, making this information invaluable for ship identification, model building, and for historians to understand the modifications made to the ship and the rationale behind them.
Additionally, this volume includes a highly detailed study of a specific Imperial Japanese Navy weapon, the Japanese 8cm/40 Type 3 HA (high angle) gun and its various related variants. The goal is to avoid duplicating material already covered in previous publications and to offer a much more in-depth examination of this specific gun used on the Haruna, as part of the author's effort to include only new and never-before-covered information in these books.
