This book is the final installment in a four-part series that delves into the construction history of the Kongô-class battlecruiser/battleship, with a specific focus on the Haruna. Though the four ships were of the same class, they differed in numerous ways, some more significant than others. Included in this book are the detailed modifications the Haruna underwent during her thirty years of service, from her initial completion as a battlecruiser in 1915 to her reconstruction and reclassification as a battleship in 1928, and ultimately her sinking in 1945.
While the general modification and reconstruction of this ship have been covered in other publications, this is the first book to attempt a comprehensive examination of all fifteen major and minor modifications, many of which have never been documented before. Each modification is illustrated with detailed, annotated line drawings, and the rationale behind the overall changes during each period is summarized.
Accompanying the drawings are the best period photographs of the ship, as well as additional drawings that showcase the documented features added and/or altered during each stage. Through this book, the reader will gain a clear and detailed understanding of the evolution of the Haruna's pagoda bridge, masts, armament, control instruments (such as rangefinders, directors, and searchlights), communications equipment, aircraft, and engine/funnel arrangements, along with the reasoning behind these changes.
This in-depth exploration was made possible by the author's access to extensive English and Japanese published data, as well as the meticulous examination of approximately 1,600 images and drawings of the Haruna collected over a period of fifty years. While the exact dates of the changes are not always known or published, the most accurate information available is provided.
Each drawing in the book documents the specific feature changes since the last period, making this information invaluable for ship identification, model building, and for historians seeking to understand the modifications made to the Haruna and the reasoning behind them.
Additionally, this volume includes a highly detailed study of a specific Japanese naval weapon, the 8cm/40 Type 3 HA (high angle) gun and its various related variants. The goal is to avoid repeating material already covered in previous publications and instead offer a much more comprehensive analysis of this specific gun used on the Haruna.
By focusing on new and previously uncovered information, the author aims to provide readers with a level of detail and insight that has not been seen in previous publications on the Kongô-class battlecruiser/battleships.
